City to shut down 840mm Steenbras pipeline for urgent maintenance this weekend

The City’s Water and Sanitation Department is planning to shut down the 840mm water pipeline from Steenbras Dam, between Somerset West and the Bosmanskop area, from Friday, 30 April 2021 at 18:00 until Sunday, 2 May 2021 at 18:00, to urgently fix a leak. This will cause reduced water pressure and intermittent water supply to Smuts, Wingerd, Dennehoek, Louis Botha, Lynns View, Helderspruit, Bakkers and surrounding areas.

In order to minimise the impact of the shut down on residents, water will be diverted from the Nomzamo pipeline and the Helderberg Water Treatment Plant to support the reservoirs in these affected areas. Residents located in higher lying areas of Somerset West and the Helderberg will however experience reduced water pressure due to this diversion.

Residents in the Helderberg area are encouraged to use water sparingly over the weekend to reduce pressure on the system while works are under way. Reducing water consumption will help reduce the impact on communities.  

Residents are also advised to store water in clean, sealed containers in advance and to ensure that their taps are left in the closed position during this period to prevent any water loss and/or water damage when the supply is restored.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused, however this maintenance will ensure future stability and continuity of water supply to the area.
